Meh. @ 07:08 am

Current Mood: disappointed

So, there's this film that everyone is talking about at the moment.

I wasn't impressed.

Spoilers ahoy, though I keep the major plot points out of it. )

I want to like this movie. There is stuff that is excellent. But, eh. I wasn't impressed with the second Spider-Man movie when I first saw it, and in a week I thought it was the best. We'll see how time influences my feelings on this movie.

Haven't made a substantial post for a while, might as well post now.

A fortnight ago, we traded in our crappy '91 Camry in for a 2004 Honda Jazz. In Red. It's a fantastic car, and we're really loving everything about it. Whether it's the presence of an air conditioner, the fact that three-point-turns are now just, well, turns, or that the rear demister works the way it should. Just think--if the old car's demister was working perhaps I would have been able to see where I was going before I broke the rear window! Oh wells.
The last two weekends )

It's been a great couple of weekends. After this weekend Izabella is going to be at her grandparents, so we might have to see if we can't get up to some antics then too. Another trip to Auckland, perhaps..?

The Iron Man movie is on in Chartwell at 6pm.

If you can make it there, be there BY 5:45 so that we have time to queue up as a group, because there's planned seating.

Meet you at the smoothie stand and I hope to see you there.

So, Iron Man will be premiering this Thursday.

Who wants to go see it at Chartwell at about 6pm-ish? There's always a screening about then, if not 6:15 or so. So, the first screening they have after 6. It can follow up with supper at our place!

If you're keen, say so. And spread the word!

Four things. @ 09:57 pm

The Iron Man movie looks so incredibly awesome. Like seriously OMG WOW.

Might be in for some temp work.

Packing is coming along slowly but surely. We've thrown out lots of things, and some stuff is in boxes, but we've still got a long way to go. Thanks to all the people who have offered to help out, we really appreciate it.

Hot Cross Buns are good.

Supporting NZ films @ 09:59 pm

Just watched Eagle vs Shark. Oh god, it was so cringe-worthy, but was also a very sweet movie. [info]tumblecoyote, you might be interested to hear it has the guy from Flight of the Conchords - the one with the deep voice. I think it's going to have international release so if you like your quirky-yet-sweet films, give it a look.

Also, this is something coming out later in the year that I thought might be up the alley of some of you people (and again, [info]tumblecoyote, I'm looking at you.)

So, the Armageddon convention this year. @ 10:27 pm

Current Mood: irritated

For some time I've been coveting the gold pass ticket for Armageddon. It was marketed as $350. We were told tickets were going on sale on September 1st. Thanks to several contributions from friends and whanau on my birthday (and thank you all so very very much,) we managed to scrape the fee together.

Yesterday I found out that tickets had been selling for five days, only for $450.

Upon further inspection, one of the things you get for the show is a photo with ONE of the guests. This apparently costs two hundred fucking dollars. What the hell.

So, looks like after all that hoo-hah, I'm going to flag the gold pass ticket.

Going by what the celebrity signatures cost last year, I could get five signatures from guests, a three day pass and a ticket to the cocktail party for less than $260. What do I miss out on? A few signatures from celebrities that I'm only marginally interested in or really don't care about (wrestling guests? No thanks), the ability to skip past lines to get these autographs, and a special card or something that you get only as a gold pass person. Oh, and a photograph that is apparently worth two hundred dollars.

What do I gain? Over $190, which I would happily spend on TPBs or Justice League Boxed Sets to take to Bruce Timm who would sign them for FREE. Hell, I could even read them while I'm standing in line for autographs!

It's disappointing in a way, there is something special about getting the fancier ticket, and it is what people contributed money towards me getting. But at the end of the day, The Gold Pass is not what it was originally promised to be. I don't blame them for raising the price, there are a lot more big names showing up than there were previously and with that comes more signatures and a heftier ticket price. But the flow-on effect for that is that the pass is now something less desirable for me. Couple that with the fact that we were dicked around on when this thing was going on sale, and it kinda makes me glad they're not getting more of my money as well.

On a different note, I've been playing movie catchup this week. Saw Simpsons on Tuesday, Harry Potter on Saturday. Contrary to what most people have told me about these films, I liked the former and was mildly disappointed with the latter. The Simpsons movie was perfect in my opinion - if they tried pushing the envelope more than they did then it just wouldn't have been a Simpsons movie. What we got was a hilarious movie that was faithful to the series. Harry Potter on the other hand, I liked what they had, but it just needed more of, well, everything. In so many scenes, things were just so rushed. I can't help but wonder what an extra 15-30 minutes would have done. Perhaps some of Hermione's lines wouldn't have to be babbled out as fast as they did, perhaps there would have been a chance to explain things, perhaps there could have been more done with Cho Chang, Snape, and Draco. Draco in particular cracks me up. I know that child actors don't usually have the same sort of success in later years, but in the case of Malfoy's actor he's getting smaller and smaller roles for the same character! I know that stuff needs to be trimmed out in adaptations, but this movie just seemed to rush through it all.

Anyway, it's way too late and I've got stuff to do tomorrow. Kid needs to get to school and I have a workshop. I'mma go sleep now.

ENGAGE RANDOM BULLET POINTS.

- Why you should never bring a verbal knife to a verbal gunfight. (Warning: Bad Language follows.) Dude, it's Kevin Smith. What did you think was going to happen?

-I cannot make two lame gay jokes under tight time constraints. I fail.

-Izabella had a pirate-themed day today. Okay together now everyone: Awwwww. )She really got into it, and could "Arr" and "Avast ye" with the best of them. That lisp she's still got (New teeth haven't grown in yet) only makes it cuter.

-Adam, here's that thing you wanted:

The rest of you - click on the link and go watch the rest of the videos. They're quite good.

-Teaser footage for the new Iron Man movie. They have got so much right in this movie, it's just awesome.

-Very good Geek Night tonight, with what was easily the best mario Kart game I've played in a long time. "GODDAMN BUS!!!"

General update @ 10:13 pm

Annnnd bullet points!

-Saw Transformers again today with [info]lord_reluctant. I didn't pay this time either, thanks to a free pass on my film squad card. Between free passes, birthday presents, prizes and competitions won, and the free kids meal toy the girl at the Burger King drivethrough gave me, there hasn't been a lot I've spent money on for this movie. The stuff I have bought was on special, too. Heh.

-To this end, I'm surprised with how much of a resurgence the movie has created. At a party I went to last weekend, people kept on asking questions about the original TF toys/cartoon, and were blown away by my encylopaedic knowledge on the subject. I know at least one guy who has taken to collecting the movie figures - and through some browbeating subtle persuasion on my part, has also joined up to a New Zealand TF community and is considering doing some repainting. ONE OF US. ONE OF US.

-Izabella lost her two front teeth recently. She has the most adorable lisp.

-I tried to make another AMV, but it didn't pan out how I had hoped. The music was too fast and the video was too slow. But I still liked the intro so I just posted the start of it. Maybe if I sped up everything it'd work out. We'd have to see.Eh, it's okay. ) [info]heatherbeast put a nice comment on a messageboard complimenting my AMV-Fu, which really made my day. Thanks, Heather. *hugs*

-School is going okay. I need to study more, but I'm having fun. My tutor is a couple of years older than me and a real geek, so the training atmosphere is really relaxed and pleasant. Plus, the other person learning at the same time as I worked at an appliance store and got us $50 off the HDD+DVD recorder we've been eyeing up!

-I really think that if you can't be bothered reading that you should reconsider whether or not a text-based roleplaying system is for you. Just sayin'.

-I was hoping for some help from Firefox users. I want to know if there is a user profile list that you can get for Firefox in a similar vein to windows users. Ideally, what this would mean is that if I were to manage multiple message board identities or gmail accounts, I could just swap my profile over rather than going through tedious logging out/logging in pages. Anyone who could help?

-I REALLY need more early nights.
